Specialist roof bird proofing across Cambridge, St Neots and all of Cambridgeshire. Solar panel mesh systems, stainless steel spikes, tensioned wire and netting. Humane nest removal before installation. Free site surveys, no subcontractors, all work guaranteed.

Pigeons, starlings, seagulls and sparrows all use Cambridge’s rooftops as nesting, roosting and feeding grounds — and every one of them causes damage when left unchecked. Nesting materials block gutters and drainage channels, causing water to back up and overflow. Droppings accumulate on tiles, solar panels, fascias and guttering — acidic guano accelerates the degradation of virtually every roofing material it contacts. Nesting birds in roof voids introduce insect parasites and can create serious health hazards from dried guano dust. The problem does not resolve itself — without proofing measures, birds return season after season to the same locations.

There is no single bird proofing solution that works everywhere. The right system depends on the species involved, the location on the roof, the aesthetic requirements of the property and the scale of the problem. We assess all of these during the survey and recommend the most appropriate and cost-effective solution. Here are the systems we work with.
Solar panel bird proofing is our most commonly requested service and the area where we see the most damage across Cambridge's growing stock of solar-equipped properties. Pigeons access the warm, sheltered space beneath panels and nest prolifically — blocking drainage channels, fouling the panel undersides, and causing wiring damage that can affect electrical performance and safety. Our solar panel mesh system creates a physical barrier around the full perimeter of the panel array using high-quality galvanised or powder-coated wire mesh, fixed using UV-stable, non-penetrating clips that attach to the panel frame without drilling into the panels or the roof tiles. This preserves your solar panel manufacturer's warranty in full, and the system is fully removable for future panel maintenance or replacement. The mesh sits flush with the panel edge and is virtually invisible from ground level.
Non-penetrating clip system | No drilling to panels or tiles | Solar warranty preserved | Fully removable | UV-stable, weather-resistant materials | Suitable for: all solar panel arrays, domestic and commercial
Stainless steel bird spike strips are one of the most effective and durable bird deterrents available, and are the standard solution for preventing birds from landing and roosting on flat, horizontal surfaces — ridge tiles, hip tiles, parapet walls, chimney stacks, ledges, sills and guttering runs. The polycarbonate base is fixed to the surface using weatherproof adhesive or mechanical fixings, and the stainless steel pins create a physical barrier that prevents birds from settling without harming them. Spike systems are available in narrow (25mm), medium (50mm) and wide (100mm+) configurations to suit the surface width. On Cambridge's Victorian and Edwardian rooftops — where long, exposed ridge and hip runs provide ideal roosting lines for pigeons — spike systems are the most effective preventative measure available.
Stainless steel pins, polycarbonate base | Available in 25mm, 50mm, 100mm+ widths | Suitable for: ridge tiles, hip tiles, chimney stacks, ledges, sills, parapet walls, guttering
Tensioned wire systems are the preferred deterrent where spikes would be visually intrusive or structurally unsuitable — particularly on Listed Buildings, period properties, and buildings within Cambridge's Conservation Areas where maintaining the visual character of the roofline is important. Stainless steel wire is tensioned between stainless posts fixed to the surface at regular intervals, creating a series of parallel lines at varying heights above the landing surface that destabilise birds trying to land without blocking them from the surface entirely. Wire systems are low-profile and nearly invisible from the street, making them ideal for prominent Cambridge facades where a spike line on the roofline would be aesthetically unacceptable. They are effective against pigeons, starlings and seagulls on ledges, sills, ridge lines and parapet cappings.
Low-profile, near-invisible from street level | Suitable for Listed Buildings and Conservation Area properties | Stainless steel wire and posts | Suitable for: ledges, sills, ridge lines, parapet cappings, chimney stacks
Bird netting is used where a complete physical exclusion is needed over a large area — open eaves, roof voids with gaps in the soffit line, large courtyard roofs, commercial loading bay canopies, warehouse rooflines and any application where other deterrent systems cannot provide full coverage. Heavy-duty UV-stabilised polyethylene netting is fixed in a tensioned system over the area to be protected, with the edges sealed to prevent re-entry at the perimeter. Netting is available in mesh sizes from 19mm (for smaller birds including sparrows and starlings) to 50mm (for seagulls and large pigeons). It is the only system that provides full exclusion from a large or irregularly shaped area, and is particularly relevant for commercial properties across Cambridge and the Cambridgeshire market towns dealing with gull or pigeon colonies on flat roof areas.
UV-stabilised polyethylene | Mesh sizes 19mm–50mm depending on species | Tensioned perimeter system | Suitable for: open eaves, roof voids, commercial roofs, large flat areas, courtyards
Chimney stacks and roof ridges are among the most frequently targeted roosting and nesting sites for birds across Cambridge's older housing stock. Pigeons roost along ridge lines and on chimney stack ledges, while jackdaws and starlings regularly enter unused flues directly through the chimney pot opening. We install spike strips to chimney stack cappings and ridge runs, fit chimney cowls and capping plates to redundant flues to prevent birds entering the flue void, and can combine chimney bird proofing with chimney maintenance work where both are needed at the same visit. Combining bird proofing with routine chimney inspection is an efficient and cost-effective approach that we can advise on during the survey.

Bird problems can range from a modest nuisance to a genuine structural and health issue — and they rarely resolve themselves without intervention. The following signs indicate a bird presence that has moved beyond incidental and into the territory where proofing measures are warranted.
Noticed any of these signs? Call 01223 859867 (Cambridge) or 01480 877624 (St Neots) for a free site survey. We assess the species involved, the entry points and landing sites, and recommend the most effective and appropriate proofing system.

Bird proofing is roof work. It requires people who know how to work safely at height, understand how roofs are constructed, and can identify related roof issues that may have contributed to or been caused by the bird problem. Using a pest controller who has never been on a roof, or a roofer who does not understand bird behaviour and legislation, both have their limitations. Here is why Cambridge homeowners choose Acorn when they need bird proofing done properly.
Our bird proofing is carried out by the same team that carries out our roofing, repair and installation work across Cambridgeshire. They can identify cracked tiles, open mortar joints, damaged fascia boards and blocked gutters that have created the access points birds are using — and fix them at the same visit. You get a bird proofing installation from people who understand what they are standing on.
We visit your property, identify the species and access points, assess the extent of any existing infestation and recommend the right system for your specific situation. You receive a written, fixed-price quotation before we start. No pressure, no hidden costs, no provisional sums on the day.
We never use harmful methods — no glue traps, no poisons, no cruel deterrents. All our systems are physical exclusion and deterrence only. We advise on the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 implications for the species on your property and do not proceed with nest removal where doing so would be unlawful without advising you of the position first.
Our solar panel mesh is fitted using UV-stable clip fixings that attach to the panel frame without drilling. Your solar panel manufacturer's warranty stays fully intact. The system is also fully removable for future panel maintenance, inspection or replacement.
All materials we use are UV-stabilised, weather-resistant and rated for outdoor exposure. Stainless steel spike pins, galvanised mesh, UV-stable polycarbonate bases and stainless wire all hold their integrity across Cambridgeshire's full seasonal temperature range. Once fitted correctly, our systems provide years of effective deterrence without maintenance.
We remove all existing nests, guano and debris with appropriate PPE before any proofing system is fitted. The area is cleaned and biocidal-treated before installation. This protects both our team and your household from the health hazards of disturbed dried guano — and prevents re-infestation by eliminating the attractant material from the nest site.

We carry out bird proofing across the whole of Cambridgeshire from our offices in Cambridge and St Neots. Solar panel mesh installations are our most frequently requested service across Cambridge’s growing solar-equipped housing stock — particularly in the newer residential areas of Cambourne, Bar Hill, Orchard Park and the southern Cambridge estates where solar panels are common. Our spike, wire and netting services serve the older areas of Cambridge — Victorian and Edwardian streets in Newnham, Petersfield and Chesterton, where ridge and chimney roosting by pigeons is prevalent. The St Neots team covers Huntingdon, St Ives, Ramsey, Godmanchester and the wider Huntingdonshire district, and reaches to Peterborough, Ely, March and Wisbech for both domestic and commercial bird proofing requirements.
Whether pigeons are nesting under your solar panels, seagulls are roosting on your ridge, starlings are entering your roof void, or you simply want a professional assessment of the bird risk on your property, Acorn Property Improvements is here to help. Free site survey, written fixed-price quote, humane methods throughout, all work guaranteed. Call our Cambridge office on 01223 859867, our St Neots office on 01480 877624, or fill in the quick form below. We respond to all enquiries the same working day.

No. Our solar panel bird proofing system uses non-penetrating UV-stable clips that attach directly to the panel frame — no drilling into the panel body, the mounting rails or the roof tiles. This means the solar panel manufacturer's warranty remains fully intact and the installation is completely reversible if panels ever need to be removed for maintenance, replacement or inspection. We specifically use this system to preserve the warranty, and we confirm this in writing as part of the quotation.
For solar panel mesh installations, the system is designed to sit flush with the panel edge and is virtually invisible from ground level. The mesh and clips are colour-matched to blend with the panel frame and roof colour. Stainless steel spike systems on ridge tiles are similarly low-profile — the individual pins are slender and are typically visible only on close inspection from a window directly above. Tensioned wire systems are effectively invisible from the street. We can show you examples of completed installations during the site survey so you can assess the visual impact before committing.
Yes, always. We carry out a full clearance of all nests, droppings, feathers and nesting debris before any proofing system is installed. This is done using appropriate PPE given the health risks associated with dried bird guano. We do not install proofing over existing nesting material — doing so would seal contaminated material in place, fail to break the re-infestation cycle (birds are strongly attracted back to existing nest scents), and potentially trap active nests inside the proofed area, which has legal implications under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. All cleared material is bagged and removed from the property.
It depends on the species and the timing. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects all wild bird species, their active nests and eggs in the UK. Removing or damaging an active nest containing eggs or live chicks is an offence. The practical effect is that nest removal is generally straightforward outside the breeding season (broadly September to February) and requires a careful assessment during breeding season (March to August). Feral pigeon nests are treated differently from protected species such as house sparrows, starlings, swifts and seagulls. We assess the legal position during the site survey and advise you honestly on the best timing and method for your specific situation. We do not proceed with clearance where doing so would risk non-compliance.
For a standard domestic solar panel installation with clearance, most jobs are completed within half a day to a full day depending on the number of panels and the extent of any existing infestation. A combined installation covering ridge spikes, solar panel mesh and chimney cowls on a larger property may take a full day. For commercial properties or properties with significant netting installations, we provide a specific timescale in the written quotation. We aim to complete all work in a single visit wherever possible to minimise disruption.

The cost of solar panel bird proofing depends on the size of the array (number of panels), the extent of any existing infestation and clearance required, and the roof access difficulty. Most standard domestic solar arrays — typically 8 to 16 panels on a residential property — can be surveyed, cleared and proofed in a single visit. We provide a free site survey and written fixed-price quotation. Call 01223 859867 to arrange your Cambridge survey.
Yes. While pigeons are our most commonly encountered problem species, we also install proofing for starlings, seagulls and sparrows across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. Each species requires a different approach: starlings exploit small gaps in the roofline and require gap sealing alongside netting or mesh; seagulls typically require spike or wire deterrent systems on flat roof areas or parapet ledges; sparrows, being a protected species, require careful non-harmful exclusion at specific entry points. We assess the species and the specific access points during the free survey and recommend the most appropriate system.
Yes. We carry out bird proofing on commercial properties across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire — industrial units, office buildings, retail premises, warehouses and agricultural buildings. Commercial installations often involve larger areas, different access requirements and potentially different species challenges (seagull colonies on flat commercial roofs, for example) compared to domestic work. We assess commercial projects during a free site survey and provide a detailed, fixed-price quotation. Call 01223 859867 to arrange a commercial survey.
